The story gets a teeny bit wonky a couple times; you know, those 'that would never happen' or 'people don't talk like that' moments, but overall it was gripping, suspenseful, and had a good share of violence in it (if you're not familiar with how insanely brutally vicious Escobar was, you may get queasy in certain parts but understand that the way he's depicted in the movie is the way he was in real life; the guy brought down a passenger jet killing 200 people, for Christ sake). I was engaged the entire movie primarily because the movie cuts back and forth to form the complete story. He also gave people jobs and always gave them housing with it - so they were indebted to him. He isn't convincing in the sense that Pablo Escobar would ever trust someone so shifty and welcome them in with open arms the way he did from the beginning of the story. Hutcherson's role should have been played by someone else in my opinion, but he was serviceable. If they thought about trying to find another job, they would also have to find another home. After, I realize he was the epitome of everything wrong with acceptance of legalizing narcotics. There are no subtitles that would have helped. This movie was entertaining and I especially like the character of Marie, who was like most of the young educate Colombian women I knew when I lived there - very aware of the handicaps of their country being under the thumb of the drug lords, but also doing everything they could to educate and help the bulk of the people. Sorry! There are some downsides in getting involved with Pablo Escobar's niece especially if you are a gringo who gives surfing lessons. I didn't see the ending coming either. The movie tied in real situations that Escobar was involved in while he was trying to track down our main character, so I thought that was a nice touch.
