Dan arranged some beers and we sat out the front watching the villagers on horse and cart go by, come in and circulate around the friendly local dogs.We headed back to the guest house (just around the corner) to share a bottle of red before dinner again overlooking the valley. Up we went to the first landing to stop at another guest house for coffee. We sat outside in the garden and were served the most amazing cheese platter with bread and most importantly Zacusca, an homemade homegrown vegetable dip/spread.
The landscape is very picturesque: beautiful hills, mountains, forests, animals and people roaming around. In a family-owned guesthouse in the village of Magura with a spectacular view. Weather in the mountains is unpredictable so make sure to take adequate hiking clothing (waterproof jacket, boots, warm clothes etc). We spent about 2 hours up and back, deciding not to make the summit so we could have sunset in the village. Unfortunately my husband hurt his knee and we were unable to do the trip so this feedback is more about their customer service. Not to mention lots of photography options along the way.Depending on the season we might stop at a sheep farm for some beautiful polenta with cheese, prepared by the chef himself, the shepherd.Hiking in the rural areas is a good opportunity to observe the village life. The Carpathian Mountains offer many spectacular sights for those going on hiking trips but Piatra Craiului Mountains is undoubtedly unique: the 25km limestone ridge is a 'wall in the sky' fascinating to watch, exciting to hike! Off to Pestera! We were lucky to get to spend a day hiking through Piatra Craiului with Marian and it was absolutely fantastic. The walk was challenging enough with great views both on the way and from the top.Back in the village I asked if we could head to the local pub. I cannot recommend going on a hike through Romanian Friend enough. We are disappointed to not have done the hike and will definitely rebook with them if we revisit Romania! We booked this 2-day trip for our family with kids on pretty short notice through Romanian Friend. However, it is recommended to have good footwear and have a basis of physical form, both if you wish to go further up the mountain (there's gravel, rocks, possibility of actual climbing) and for the way down, which is strenuous and you are better of with at a good foothold. We couldnt have a better time if it wasnt for Bogdan and his knowledge of the mountains! We were treated to a warming dish of polenta and cheese with some amazing pork on the side. We'll pass through fragrant forests, traditional mountain villages where we meet locals and stop at clearings to admire beautiful views!
