This is the handiest way to connect MIDI gear to tablet and smartphone apps. It solves the issue of complicated interfaces and cables that you need to connect your computer or mobile device to your MIDI instruments. This is probably way too late to be useful but I just saw this as I only joined here recently. Now how COOL is that!!!
I'm new to MIDI and Yamaha does explain that this device is used to connect to other MIDI devices however with the Bluetooth adjective I thought this would also serve as a traditional Bluetooth device. Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2017. It's great.

I had installed it on the iPad, but didn't think I needed to set up Bluetooth from that app, figured it would be in Settings on the iPad.

The Yamaha UD-BT01 however gets power from connecting a USB power supply, so it will work with the Implulse controllers. One of the outcomes of the development debate within the Community of MIDI enthusiasts, was to create a detachable design. Gigging musician. For example, I immediately had our flagship synthesizer, the Moog ONE, controlling and being controlled by our older MIDI instruments and vintage MIDI controllers. Frequently I use a number of iPad apps with my Yamaha Disklavier Mark III grand piano (circa 2003). In short, WIDI master delivers what the MD-BT01 does, only with a better performing Bluetooth technology in its core. Therewith the Yamaha MD-BT01 is basically a replacement for the USB to MIDI cable. Music Background: Long time player, old schooled.
Apparently the reason for the selective performance is that not all midi ports have the power connectors that the MD-BT01 needs.
This works wonderfully with Logic Pro X once you set it up with a Mac. This is not a traditional Bluetooth device. That was frustrating and caused a few hours of delay in getting them to work. This is where WIDI technology leaves Yamaha way behind. This way you can also use it with TRS MIDI devices and the more rare 6-PIN DIN MINI as used on Yamaha's Reface series. It couldn't hog the Lightning port so I needed a Bluetooth model.
So I'm shipping it back, unfortunately. It powered right up. Anyone using a Neo Ventilator wiht a Korg CX3.
Around the same time CME released its WIDI BUD, Yamaha released the MD-BT01 and UD-BT01. Purchased expecting low latency wireless MIDI control of my AKAI MCPLive via the AKAI MPK249 using the MD-BT01.
The idea is simple, you set one WIDI device as the central and 4 others as the peripherals and you can enjoy 2-way communication between the 4 devices and its central device.
And, although the piano app support desk told me they didnt recommend Bluetooth because of latency issues and left me feeling Bluetooth wasnt supported, Im here to tell you it works like a charm.
With the Axiom there was very low latency and seemed to work very well.
My advice to anyone trying MIDI on iPad, forget USB, just do Bluetooth. Excellent. Leading to lower latency and wider range performance for WIDI Master. Yes they are longer than the Quicco Sound mi.1, but they work perfectly! This device helps to create wireless MIDI connection between my new MacBook Pro to my old synth keyboard. I returned my product because I just didn't need it after all, but I have to say the service by Brian at Sweetwater was awesome. This piece worked like a charm.
The previous review was possibly misleading to consumers as he was using the wrong Yamaha wireless adapter. And the most exciting development in the world of MIDI together with the current MPE solutions and the arriving MIDI 2.0! Very useful product.
While I love that there are no wires, the latency issue causes this interface to fail to deliver in performance. So if you buy this device, be aware that you also need the (free) app in order to get the iPad paired. I'll probably wait for official driver support.
I have a Roland AX 7 since new and hardly played it because of midi cables with a stand up keyboard is a mess. It does not work witth my 1-year old M-Audio CTRRL-49 or my General Music S3 workstation keyboard from 1990. Next go to the app your going to use.

This plug works great for using my Reface CS as a MIDI controller for my iPad synth apps. And no, I'm not affiliated with any of these products or Sweetwater (but they are great folks to do business with), I just use these devices together with my stuff and I love it!

I got lucky, and when I plugged in my MD-BT01, the lights came on right away. Happy customers, one piece of gear at a time! This means both adapters can function without an external power supply. It's okay and works as stated, but it's a bit of a pain to set up the connection, then switch to the app you want to use.
We got this Yamaha Bluetooth adapter because it was recommended and we've been very satisfied with Yamaha products generally. I use both iPhone 5S and iPad Mini.
This product needs power from the midi port, which is very common, but not 100% standard across all manufacturers. The package arrived very quickly.
It"s a little pricey for 1 in and 1 out in my opinion. And then I found this! Maybe in the future! Absolutely recommended, well worth the price. It is powered through the midi port so no external power supply is needed.

Great item! The IPad Pro didn't recognize the MD-BT01 directly through Bluetooth, but I installed I have a universal audio apollo and while Recording with protools, there is latency that just doesn't go away. Learn More. Best of luck to others seeking the wireless MIDI solution. :/
